More Amish Visits

Debbie came to Ohio for a visit.

While here, Debbie and Esther talked about ways & means to help (click) Jill, a daughter of a friend who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Esther showed Debbie how to prepare "Rocket Booster" drink, a mixture of garlic, onion, honey, cayenne pepper, ginger & lemon. Taken daily this will help increase the immune system.

On Debbie's last day of visit, we drove to our Amish friends and had a great time learning how bees gather nectar and turn them to honey. Nectar in liquid form is thickened into the right consistency by the fanning action of honey bees' wings (bees' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute). Honey is then sealed in hives (see hive box picture).

Milo showed the "refrigeration room" where produce are stored in summer. Winter, he goes to the pond to saw & haul chunks of ice. "The ice will last the whole summer," he added.

Red and yellow apples are delicious especially when picked direct from the tree. We brought home whole wheat Amish bread from Millie, honey from Milo & Anna and zucchini from Andy & Anna (another Anna).

Debbie is a supporter of the New Center of learning.

Avoid Hospitals

When is the best time to avoid hospitals like plaque?

If you CAN, stay out of the hospital during summer-especially July. Why? That's the month when medical students become interns, interns become residents, and residents become fellows and full-fledged doctors. They are NEW on the job.

Summer hospital horror stories aren't just medical lore:
  • Adjusted mortality rate rises 4 percent in July and August click (National Bureau of Economic Research) for the average major teaching hospital.
  • 14 more deaths occur at major teaching hospitals than normally without turnover.
Another tip: Try to schedule surgeries first thing in the morning, and preferably early in the week, when doctors are at their best and before schedules get backed up, Sherer says. click (Dr. David Sherer's Hospital Survival Guide).

So get wise, ask, and read! Your Hospital won't tell you a lot of things.

Summer is gone and Fall is here. Enjoy. Avoid me & the hospital if you can :-)
