A whirlwind of activity the week before Christmas, left me physically exhausted, but with laughter & prayer, I was emotionally, spiritually uplifted.
Looking back, I am blessed to be with friends who in spite of illness they made me feel happy.
Deb had surgery... called her the day after and asked how she was doing and her answer was, "If I could only see my back, I could have done the surgery myself!" She made me laugh so loud, turning my concerns into a smiling face.
Neneng promised to take care of herself and happily said, "I am now ready for the kids who will visit this Christmas. I had my exercise, my massage and my rest!"
But ended up admitted in the hospital!
After talking with her by phone she said, "I had been trying to get in touch with you the whole weekend. You are the only person who could have made me laugh while in isolation."
I countered, "You said earlier you were not reachable and I never thought you would be in the hospital." I brought her home after she was discharged and we laughed and laughed together.
Ben & I visited our Amish friend, Anna. I asked how she was doing (few weeks without seeing each other) and she answered with a sweet smile, "Actually, I am NOT OK."
She had an allergic reaction to the herbal medications and was getting ready to visit an Amish "natural doctor" in Pennsylvania. She was very uncomfortable but her smiles melted my heart.
Lois was in a vehicular accident and is recuperating from an amputated leg and the other leg shuttered but repaired. With deep concern we visited her. Her high spirits and a smile made us leave her room happy and light-hearted. We were thankful, she is alive!
Nikki our daughter called to tell us that "Shadow" our pet (cat) of 16 years was attacked by a stray dog and died in the car while being brought to the Vet. She was in tears but started smiling after reminding her of the happy times with (him) while moving with Nikki's brother to Kentucky, Tennesee, Indiana, then back to Ohio.
Gayle finally found a combination-treatment of her pains ... after seeing three different doctors, four including Ben (?) She commented, "I think you are the best doctor(!), Esther." She is feeling better and at present enjoying her family visit to Florida.
All of them have something in common! They were all "Smiling & Laughing" although hurting.
Friends, as we face another NEW YEAR, we hope to continue smiling and laughing to boost our immune system.
"Laugh and the world laughs with you," is a true adage.
