A Week Before Christmas

Written by: Esther
Happy Holidays

(double click me)

A whirlwind of activity the week before Christmas, left me physically exhausted, but with laughter & prayer, I was emotionally, spiritually uplifted.

Looking back, I am blessed to be with friends who in spite of illness they made me feel happy.

Deb had surgery... called her the day after and asked how she was doing and her answer was, "If I could only see my back, I could have done the surgery myself!" She made me laugh so loud, turning my concerns into a smiling face.

Neneng promised to take care of herself and happily said, "I am now ready for the kids who will visit this Christmas. I had my exercise, my massage and my rest!"

But ended up admitted in the hospital!

After talking with her by phone she said, "I had been trying to get in touch with you the whole weekend. You are the only person who could have made me laugh while in isolation."

I countered, "You said earlier you were not reachable and I never thought you would be in the hospital." I brought her home after she was discharged and we laughed and laughed together.
Bounce
Ben & I visited our Amish friend, Anna. I asked how she was doing (few weeks without seeing each other) and she answered with a sweet smile, "Actually, I am NOT OK."

She had an allergic reaction to the herbal medications and was getting ready to visit an Amish "natural doctor" in Pennsylvania. She was very uncomfortable but her smiles melted my heart.

Lois was in a vehicular accident and is recuperating from an amputated leg and the other leg shuttered but repaired. With deep concern we visited her. Her high spirits and a smile made us leave her room happy and light-hearted. We were thankful, she is alive!

Nikki our daughter called to tell us that "Shadow" our pet (cat) of 16 years was attacked by a stray dog and died in the car while being brought to the Vet. She was in tears but started smiling after reminding her of the happy times with (him) while moving with Nikki's brother to Kentucky, Tennesee, Indiana, then back to Ohio.

Gayle finally found a combination-treatment of her pains ... after seeing three different doctors, four including Ben (?) She commented, "I think you are the best doctor(!), Esther." She is feeling better and at present enjoying her family visit to Florida.

All of them have something in common! They were all "Smiling & Laughing" although hurting.

Friends, as we face another NEW YEAR, we hope to continue smiling and laughing to boost our immune system.

"Laugh and the world laughs with you," is a true adage. Christmas Tree

TO GIVE or TO RECEIVE?

Esther asked me a question yesterday, "Which is healthier, to give or to receive?"

*Giving makes me feel good and satisfied because I know I am sharing God's blessings, but receiving (His blessings), through benevolence of others is also wonderful!

"Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year" to you all, folks!

Ben & Esther

Two MDs Featured at Publication

Written by:
Esther Hernando-Sanidad

My "special doctors" were featured by The Hartland Ministry Report in their quartery publications the last quarters of 2005 & 2006.

Dr. Prospero Roda, a general surgeon, had been extremely and seriously ill.

He was suffering from the side-effects of the medications for treatment of pneumonia. He developed kidney failure, full-blown diabetes, and a fibrillating heart. He thought he's out (strike 3) and the end is near.

But all these changed!

From a balooned weight of 210 pounds, he's now down to the 140's and out from the 8 or 9 medications he was taking. Secret? Following the natural rules of health click this 8 health rules he learned from Hartland Wellness Center.

Another physician is Ben. He had cancer of the esophagus. In lieu of chemotherapy and radiation, he choose to go to Hartland Wellness Center. More than ten years since diagnosis, he is still cancer free.

Click to read "Strike Three! You're....
Click to read "Doctor Fights Cancer".

For the past 34 years, I always remember what Uncle Pros told me after our wedding day. "You are now married to Ben meaning you are also married to the family." I thought that was very touching and really felt accepted by the family.

Elma Lou Roda, MD, Blanchie to me and to many friends while in school (PUC) never crossed my mind she would also become my Auntie Lou. Am so blessed we continue to stay very very special friends. When Ben was diagnosed with cancer they were all there for me.

One evening, Auntie Lou spoke to me about Uncle's serious illness. I understood as I had been through the same situation, something that is hard to explain, something we do not learn in school, like experiencing what one is going through. I told her, "I will do the best I know I can," for him and "leave the rest to the Lord."

I told Auntie and Arthur (Ben) to do their part by encouraging him to go to the Hartland Center while I do the arranging.

As expected it was hard (er) and difficult to convince him to go to a non-hospital institution for treatment. That's understandable..being an accomplished surgeon who practiced medicine for almost 40 years and now taking a different route (natural remedies) for himself besides the hospital?

With lots of prayers, understanding and love from his family, he reluctantly agreed, left his practice and admitted himself to Hartland.

Result? A miracle!

At present both uncle and nephew continue to share their experiences to inspire others. Both are back working full-time with better perspective & understanding of their patients.

Thanks For Little Things

After Ben's fight with cancer, I made it a habit of responding immediately when I hear him call my name (in case it's an emergency). This time (not an emergency) he found something on the refrigerator door... a note that touched my heart. *Kassie left a note of thanks. Yes, there are so much to be thankful for, but what caught my attention is a reminder of always having to say, "Thank You."

A friend emailed to me..."would like to take this time to let you know how much I value our friendship. A LOT!!!!" What an encouragement!

May every minute/day of life on earth a thanksgiving for all of us, for wealth is health, family, friends and above all, God.

We would like to take this opportunity to let you know we appreciate so much your prayers, your thoughts & for letting us know you enjoy/learn from our blogs.

Happy thanksgiving to you all.

*(Kassie is our grand daughter, who recently spent a night with us).

No Longer "Secret Santa"

A 58 year old man who was known for many years as the Kansas City "Secret Santa" had revealed himself after recently being diagnosed with the dreaded disease esophageal cancer. The following is a qoute from an article written by Lynn Franey of the Kansas City Star: KC's Secret Santa revealed...

"For 26 years, the man Kansas City knows as Secret Santa has freely given away money — $100 bills by the handful — to hundreds of down-on-their-luck folks.

"He never has told them who he is. Instead, he has remained anonymous, an unnamed Jackson County businessman thrilled to share the joy of a little extra cash at the holidays.

"But things have changed.

"He has cancer, and this year is probably the last for a 'sleigh ride'."

Click here to find out who he is and read more about his incredible experience which led him to give away more than $1.3 million in Christmas cash for many years, but sad to note that he may be losing his battle with cancer.

Folks, let us hope & pray he can successfully fight this challenge of his life so he can continue to do good for his fellow man.

Organic Foods

Some flowers & birds (see bird house-feeder) protect plants from insects.

Our Amish friend's vegetable garden.

Veggie & fruit peelings (compost) used as fertilizers (our patio garden).

OK folks, back to basics: HEALTH

Organic foods are going mainstream. Two-thirds of Americans bought some type of organic food last year as we are increasingly aware of the health benefits of pesticide-free foods.

What are the benefits of organic foods?
  • Diets heavy in organic foods almost completely eliminate exposure to dangerous insecticides known to interrupt the neurological development in children.
  • Organics are more nutritious. Organically grown fruits and vegetables contain more phytochemicals, which scientists believe help prevent disease.
  • What are phytochemicals? Phytochemicals, also referred to as phytonutrients, are chemicals found in fruits, vegetables and plants that give them color, taste and smell (love that garlic!), and also serve as protective, disease-fighting compounds.
  • They have antioxidant and anticancer properties. Some common names of phytochemicals that you might recognize are lycopene, which is found in tomatoes and peppers, carotenoids, which are found in carrots and oranges, and flavonoids, which are found in soy.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) ranked the amounts of pesticide found in common fruits and vegetables. The study was based on pesticide tests conducted by the US Department of agriculture and US Food and Drug Adminstration.

The highest in insecticide residue are: peaches, strawberries, apples, nectarines, pears, cherries, red raspberries, and imported grapes. The most insecticide-laden vegetables include: spinach, bell peppers, celery, and potatoes. Tomatoes and lettuce rank as 9 and No. 24.

Nonorganic fruits containing the fewest pesticides include: bananas, kiwi, mangos, papaya, watermelon, and pineapples. Vegetables low in pesticides include, asparagus, avocado, broccoli, cauliflower, corn, and onions.

The full list is at (click here) Food News from EWG.

The drawback to organics is cost. Organic fruits and vegetables cost about 20 percent more than conventional produce. However, prices are beginning to drop as more organic food hits the market, the price difference may fall to 10 percent.

How can we limit our exposure to pesticides?
  • We can limit our exposures to pesticides by washing produce in cold water. However, some pesticides are not water soluble. Wash fruits with warm water with sea salt, or commercial fruit washes.
  • Trim the tops of vegetables and remove the outer layers of lettuce and cabbage.
  • Look for local grown produce. Growers use less pesticide when they don't ship their produce long distance. Local grocery stores like Meijers, Krogers, Trader Joe's, Safeway, to name a few have organic sections.
  • Avoid produce grown in other countries where growers may use USDA-prohibited insecticides.
  • The best way is to plant your own garden. Here you can avoid spraying your plants with dangerous insecticides. Great benefit comes too from freshly harvested produce (direct from garden to your kitchen), more phytonutrients.
It seems almost everyday, we hear news of many who are getting sick with cancer, etc. One way of helping ourselves in preventing these diseases is to avoid "triggering factors" like non-organic fruits and vegetables laden with pesticides.

Avoiding nonorganic versions of the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables will reduce your exposure to pesticides by 90 percent, according to the EWG studies.

Esther prepares very simple meals at home. When reading labels (processed foods) she stays away from foods that have many ingredients that long, hard to pronounce and hard to understand words. To her that means, not good for the body. The simplier and less ingredients the better.

Here are definitions from the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) what "Organics" mean:
  • "Organic" describes food that has been grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, in soil free of such chemicals for at least 3 years.
  • "USDA Organic" describes products at least 95 percent organic. Those that meet this standard are allowed to carry the "USDA Organic" seal.
  • "Made With Organic" products are at least 70 percent organic. These are allowed to use the phrase "Made With Organic" on the front label.
  • Foods less than 70 percent organic can list their organic ingredients on the label, but cannot mention them on the front package.

Former Philippine President & Imelda Marcos

Written by: Esther

Election time in USA!

We are very fortunate to have the freedom of choice.

As a filipina-born and now a US citizen, I am proud to be able to exercise this freedom.

The Philippines (my birth country) is still very dear to my heart. It had gone through numerous political changes since I was born in 1947. But what's constant is relative PEACE in general. Yes, USA liberated my beloved country (Philippines) from the Japanese occupation. Since then, we became independent, a peace loving country.

Of course, I grew up admiring the US soldier! A great liberator, a lover of freedom and peace! Sixty (60) years of peace like USA is awesome! Thank you, USA!

I had the great privilege to meet the former President Ferdinand Marcos & the former first lady, Imelda Marcos. Of course, everyone knows that the president was deposed by the people with the help of the United States. Well, as a Christian believer, I know that "events" are orchestrated by someone up there in heaven. God allow things to happen according to his will.

We do our part by voting (I hope you do, tomorrow). As Christians, we can be used by God to do His will. Doing nothing is not acceptable. Let us get involved. Let us vote!

Yes, again I say I am very fortunate to meet Ex-President Ferdinand E. Marcos (before passing away) and the famous Imelda R. Marcos. It was a first-hand experience to hear their opinion and share a part of my country's political history, the events that led to their fleeing the Philippines. Thanks to my husband Ben and his family who are related to the Marcoses.

The Marcoses arrived in Honolulu, February 26, 1986 aboard a U.S. Air Force transport plane after fleeing the Philippines. Many may not agree with me, but I am glad the first family cooperated with the US political leaders. This saved many lives.

Thanks for the memories. I will keep them forever in my heart!

A Gentleman & A Soldier

Written by: Esther

After we moved to Marion from New York in 1975, my cousin Prescy, who came to help when our daughter Nikki was born, remembered that she and our relatives had a pen pal from Ohio.

We contacted our parents right away and gathered more information about him. His name was Delbert Smith, and guess what? He lived here in Marion, Ohio.

He was in the USAF who served in the Philippines. My cousin and I thought of him (whom we never met) as a "faceless" good man, a man who my family lost contact with for 20 years.

When my relatives came to visit us, we set up a reunion. It was awesome!

He was a tall (6' 4"), good-looking guy, with a military bearing, even after many years since he served his country. He showed us all the letters & momentos he received from my family. The letters were well-preserved and we had a great time reading them.

He was also a very caring, loving and smart educated man. He believed in good education. My cousin Prescy now a physician in Little Rock, Arkansas, and I will never forget his financial help during our early schooling.

It was a great joy that I and my family had the chance to return the favor with our time and love when he got sick & lived alone at the Marion Square Apartments until he rested in peace.

After his funeral, we also had the chance to meet other members of his family and friends in our home. We found out that after coming back from his military service, he became a respected educator & taught English & Spanish. He was also a musician and played piano in his church.

I salute him for his love to God, to his country, and his sacrifice to his fellowman.

I am blessed to have known and met a gentleman, educator and a soldier!

"Hello, Joe! Give Me Five Cents?"
Written by: Esther

The only time I get involved with politics is when I voted, a choice I have taken since becoming a citizen of this great country.

But now, I love to listen to the issues especially this election time. I "weigh-in" on some issues between the political parties but, the arguments do not bother me at all. However, I was surprised when I heard Mr. Kerry's comment or "joke" about our troops in Iraq. I was stunned. Is it because it reminded me of my own past experiences with the military?

Ben like to do different things aside from his profession. He joined the US Air Force. It was only after his voluntary military application was approved when he told me about it. It made me happy because I was reminded where I grew up in the Philippines near a US military base.

Yes, I grew up admiring the "American Soldier," who looked so dignified and well groomed in his military uniform.

Because my parents were always traveling, I stayed with my grandparents while in grade school. We lived in a house located just outside the Air Force base. They (grandparents) also had a restaurant called "Chicken Charlie." It was named after my grandfather Vicente (Charlie, as he was called by his American friends), who cooked a unique fried chicken enjoyed by the military clientele.

I looked forward to greeting the American soldier/friends who passed by our house on their way to the restaurant. I often say to them, "Hello, Joe, give me five cents?" They dig deep into their pockets and give me money. Until now, I smile when I think about it. When I was younger, I heard everyone call the uniformed service men "Joe" and I thought then that all the Americans were named "Joe!"

When Ben joined the Air Force, I felt so proud of him, for his willingness to serve although it took him away from me one (1) weekend a month for his trainings. He never told me where he was going, only the name of the State. I figured it out that it must be a secret at that time.

When Ben was "activated" to serve during the Middle East war in 1991, I could not believe that a small town like Marion, someone like him would be called to serve.

No questions asked when he was called to report. He was few hours late reporting for duty because he wanted to say "goodbye" to his kids who were in school (not knowing that he was already being traced if he reported for duty or not).

Inside a small room in the base, together with other members of the group and their families, we were ushered in to meet the military attorney, minister, and other people in uniform to sign papers. Didn't say much except to give all my support I can give to him.

It was tough to take care of our 3 young children after he left. Financially, whatever the government gave us we accepted, much much less than what we were used to receiving each month. Inspite of the hardships that came with this situation, we felt the joy of serving our country.

After the war was over, Ben came home and I was surprised to know how many people who expressed their support to him and the other troops. Many from the surrounding neighborhood came to our house to welcome him back. That was really amazing.

This is what I can say to our troops who are in Iraq protecting our freedom, "We care and we pray for your safe return. We respect you!"

To me the healthy way to deal with Mr. Kerry's comment is not to take it personally. Politics as usual! Am so proud to be a nurse/wife of a retired USAF Lt. Col.

"Stuck In Iraq"

Photo of our troops' response is shared by Joel Fegarido. Thanks, Joel.

Esther at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Exchange (BX)

Esther and I just arrived a few minutes ago from a trip to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where we often go to shop.

While driving, we heard from the air waves what the Senator from Massachusett, "honorable" John F. Kerry, told a group of California students that individuals who do not study hard and do their homework would likely "get stuck in Iraq."

You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.” by John Kerry.

At first, I could not believe what I was hearing.

Still fresh in my memory was the time when I was called by our then former President George H. W. Bush, to serve our country when the regime of Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. My unit composed of physicians, nurses, medical technicians, and other paramedical troops, served. For years before the war (Dessert Storm), we trained very hard to be able to protect our country and our Allies in time of war. We were all professionals!

Again, we are at war in Iraq, and to hear politicians like Senator Kerry "joke" about our Commander-in-Chief, the leader of our troops and imply negative about our troops in uniform is "unkind" to say the least.

Salmonella Outbreak!

Another food contamination news release today is a Salmonella outbreak in 18 States making people sick mostly adults and 60% women. It is believed the bacteria is spread by contaminated tomatoes & lettuce.

These are the symtoms:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Fever
  • Headache
According to US Health officials, tracking the source is tough but the advise to protect yourself is to take precaution by "washing your vegetables thoroughly."

Fruits and vegetables become contaminated when they come in contact with water contaminated by animal agriculture, animal-based fertilizers, kitchen surfaces used for meat preparation, or unwashed hands that have picked up an animal-borne infection.

Recently, E. coli contamination of bagged spinach had sickened and killed people. Bagged produce is often precut, releasing water and nutrients that feed bacteria. Trapped moisture creates a humid heaven for bacteria if refrigeration fails.

I hope these disturbing news will not dissuage us from eating fresh fruits and leafy green vegetables.

They are full of calcium, fiber and antioxidants.

Simple suggestion: Wash fruits and vegetables with warm water and sea-salt before putting them in your refrigerator. Or use a "Fruit & Vegetable Wash," which you can purchase from grocery stores. This wash product is proven to safely remove pesticides, waxes and chemicals, too.

Cancer Flareups

Today, I attended a very interesting discussion about METASTATIC carcinoma (cancer reappearing in other organs).

A case presented was a 90 year old who had problems with pain and was found to have gallstones. During surgery, the surgeon found besides gallstone, a lesion or tumor in the gallbladder.

Pathologic (microscopic) studies showed that the lesion or tumor originated from her breast. Five (5) years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. No treatment was done because of decisions made by her family. There were no symptoms in the interim.

What are the most frequent metastatic tumors which may reappear many years after primary tumor? They are:
  • Malignant melanoma
  • Breast carcinoma
  • Ovarian carcinoma
  • Stromal sarcomas of the uterus
  • Others like lung & colon cancer.
Why does it take some of these tumors many years to reappear?

General concensus by the doctors in the discussion agreed that factors like age, immune system, genetics and others like complex interplay of host and tumor factors complicated by interventional factors, i.e. other diseases and therapeutic interventions can cause reappearance of dormant cancers.

Immune system is the least understood. However, some factors show that lymphocytes (cells of immune system) are depleted with age, about 90% depletion at 90 years. Therefore, the containment power of the immune system is compromised with age.

Lung and colon cancers may remain dormant for many years, then "takes off" or "flare up" when immune status is compromised.

So co-survivors of cancer, "What are we going to do?" How can we boost our immune system? We cannot just sit around and wait until cancer "flares up!"

I am very fortunate to be able to exercise, choose the right kind of nutritious food, rest and put my trust to someone who "created" me. Yes, fortunate to be surrounded by supportive children, relatives and a wonderful help-meet!

Attorney Attends

Special Seminar Guest...
*fifth from left, front row.

Three (3) years ago, a very ill "patient" asked someone to drive her to attend a testimonial meeting in one of the churches in Ohio. She had (click) lymphoma.

We later found out that when she heard and read about my recovery from esophageal cancer, she decided to meet with us, thus the meeting in a church where I spoke that day.

With faith and great determination, she "abruptly" terminated the conventional cancer treatments. In stead she enrolled to the (click) Hartland Wellness Center. The rest is history, a survivor of non-hodgkins lymphoma.

Here is her own account of the past three (3) years:

Thank you for your personal message to me. The Sunday presentation in your facility was very, very inspiring. Although this was my third time seeing Tony and Nora's "Natural Home Remedies," this time I am strong enough mentally and physically to implement them in my daily life.

I was especially impressed by your wife's testimony of you and your wife suggesting the use of the "rocket fuel" to help persons recover. So I purchased and started using it today. I also began yesterday and today using the GI Detox formula that Tony had at the program. However, I have been feeling lethargic and weak in the stomach for a few hours after taking the Detox; I hope that is a sign of the cleansing effect which will cease after a few days.

Oh, at the beginning of my diagnosis for non-hodgins lymphoma in Jan 2003, I did have two short radiation treatments-which I later surmised resulted in a hole in my bladder that God healed naturally. And I had five chemo treatments--two at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital and Three at Riverside Hospital in Columbus. I was initially told I would need to take 7-10 chemo treatments before the drugs would break down my organs.

I abruptly terminated treatments and went to Hartland for 17 days Jul-Aug 2003. God really blessed and the healing took place. A Feb 2004 PET scan revealed no tumor, no cancer. I continue follow-ups and periodically, less frequently than the doctors recommend to have stents replace in the urethra tubes. Would you believe, just this spring, I finally understood that my low blood count was due to creatine problems resulting in the low production of red blood cells.

The health remedies program and your testimonies helped me realize that the expensive juice that I have been consuming is not as effective as God's natural, low cost, easy to find remedies that were presented.

Until this summer, I had been slowly regaining physical strength, rebuilding my immune system and fighting re-occurring bacterial infections due primarily to the strong antibiotics and numerous blood transfusions I have had. Now, God has blessed me with more vitality such that I just completed a one month program to return to my career as an attorney. So as of the end of September, I have begun looking for jobs so that I can obtain the fee for re-activating my license.

Another blessing is that I finally moved to my own apartment approximately six weeks ago, so now I have my large collection of books -- divided between Spirit of Prophecy and other Adventist writers, nutrition and fitness, and current events -- various furniture items and more space to exercise, to use the computer freely and to study.

However, I still have bowel and bladder problems, which I strongly believe will be healed with the above program of natural treatments, juicing and a committed change from non-vegetarian to vegan and a more raw foods eating plan.

May Our Heavenly Father' s richest blessings continue to be upon you, your wife and family, Ester Harber.

Folks, this experience is an inspirational testimony of FAITH and determination to get well the natural way. More power to you, attorney!

Kitchen Remedies Seminar

Live demonstration on how to prepare natural remedies found in your kitchen.

Wow, it was a very interesting and impressive show!

Bernard started with a short introduction, "good circulation promotes good health," and then explained & demonstrated what it meant.

Most of our problems result from poor circulation. Increasing circulation flushes out toxins from our body, thus promoting better well-being and health. How do we promote good circulation? He emphasized the role of the 8 Physicians (natural remedies): Good nutrition, exercise, water, sunshine, abstemiousness, air, rest and trusting in God's power.

He then demonstrated hot fomentation to treat headache, head colds, flu, sinusitis, bronchitis, muscle & joint pains, menstrual cramps, colic, and some other ailments as a result of diseases like diabetes, smoking, and stress. He showed pictures of "shocking" the body with a cold spray. "End your warm bath with a cold shower," is his advise. Simply rubbing the skin with a brush can also effect local circulation.

We were impressed by the use of a "blue ball" to treat constipation. Rolling the ball over the abdomen following the movement of the colon can help eliminate stool.

How about herbs? Yes, they are used to enhance and boost the immune system, too. Nora demonstrated mixtures of honey, thyme, rosemary, mints, onions, garlic, and olive oil to make cough syrups and drinks to relieve many ailments.

They also showed the many uses of charcoal, honey, pine sap & ice to treat infections, small cuts, and cold sores. Soaps and lotions with aloe vera are all home made and available at the end of the session.

Folks, you have to attend one of these seminars to get "hands-on" experience on how to prepare these simple remedies using everyday ingredients from your kitchen.

Bernard and Nora Ricono are co-directors of Tennessee Institute Lifestyle Education. It is an institution that train "citizens of heaven."Both are licensed massage therapists and natural remedies specialists. Here is how to get in touch with them: call 913-863-3553 or Choosing Life Center of Learning: 740-382-9825 or 740-383-2478

Doctor Goes "Natural"

"Ben, I want a booster."

I thought he was trying to tell me that he needed a booster tetanus shot. But, he really meant a "rocket fuel booster," a concoction that can increase the immune system.

My doctor friend came to the OR to show me his bandaged forefinger.

A few days earlier, I noticed that his finger was starting to swell and I told him that infection was setting in. He said that a frayed metal plug he was trying to fix behind his computer poked his finger. The following morning, he woke up with severe excruciating pain.

He went to see his medical doctor who prescribed an antibiotic (cipro) and ordered blood and culture sensitivity tests. The pain did not resolve. He consulted a surgeon who decided to incise and drain the wound and ordered another antibiotic (clindamycin) based on the sensitivity test. He was also taking another kind of antibiotic (cephalosporin) to treat a local armpit infection.

The result of the blood test arrived and the medical doctor noticed his white blood cell (WBC are infection fighters) count was precipitously low at 1,500. The normal count is 4,500-10,500. The doctor was gravely concerned. He immediately referred him to another physician, this time an Oncologist (cancer doctor).

Was there a history of recent viral or chronic infection? Does he have malignancy of the bone marrow? These were some of the questions to be answered.

Blood smear did not show any abnormal finding and the oncologist decided that his bone marrow was severely suppressed by the antibiotics. He advised him to STOP all medications immediately and ordered blood test a few days later.

In the meantime, Esther and I agreed to help this friend (an honor & a privilege). She stayed closeby in town & Gayle did the traveling to visit other people we are helping out.

Esther started him with carrot juice mixed with cabbage, parsely, celery, and sugar beet. Taken four (4) times daily for three (3) days plus the rocket fuel booster. In between juicing a "smoothie" made up of raw honey, blueberry, banana, black & red grapes with seeds, peach & soya milk. Early in the morning, water and lemon juice to start the day.

Local hydrotherapy and debridement are part of the treatment with charcoal poultice at night. Exercise by walking and use of a lot of drinking water to flush the system.

The pain subsequently eased and the swelling started to disappear. The blood test results came back and the WBC increased to 1,800 in a couple of days. Another test was done two days later and the count was up to 2,500. The white blood cell count is still low but we are definitely encouraged by the gradual but progressive increase.

We invited him for lunch yesterday. Esther prepared wild brown rice, organic vegetables, baby broccolli, cabbage, sugar beets leaves and baked sweet potato freshly dug from our garden. she also prepared tofu patties with herbs like garlic, parsely and grounded sunflower & flax seeds.

Folks, my friend's condition is an example of an adverse reaction from the use of antibiotics.

Medications can result to conditions that may do more harm than good. Be sure to read and be informed. Ask your physician before using these powerful & dangerous drugs.

Go for natural cure, if you can and the Lord will do the rest.

*My friend choose to go for Natural Remedies. His wife is out of town (Hawaii) to visit relatives for a couple of weeks. She's arriving home today. He did not tell her about his blood test results because he did not want her to worry while she is gone. We are looking forward to work with her to further boost her husband's immune system.

No Safe Place

"Man Storms Amish School... 5 Girls Dead."

This is horrific.

Many who had been reading our blogs called us and expressed their concern about our Amish friends.

Yes folks, the killing of these young Amish school children in Pennsylvania hit me and Esther like a lightning bolt.

How could a peace-keeping, peace-loving and religious group of innocent school children get killed by a deranged, guilt-ridden man who is on a mission to exact revenge(?) on what he claims he did 20 years ago and will do it again? "Unbelievable & again, horrific."

When you click our blog archive, you will read at one point our first experience with (click) the Amish. It was in a funeral in Homer, Michigan. A young church Bishop died of cancer. Many came to share the grief. Amish came from far away Canada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Indiana and Ohio.

We really do not know much about the Amish, but for some historical perspective, Esther and I often interview our friends. We learned that the ancestors of all of today's Amish originated in Switzerland in the early 1500s. Part of the Reformation, their core beliefs included adult baptism, nonresistance to aggression, and the complete separation of church and state.

Because these beliefs ran counter to majority views, ...misconceptions about them are common. the Amish, or Anabaptists as they were then called, were driven into the mountains where they adapted to an independent, farm-based way of life. As recently as 30 years ago, three-quarters of the American Amish were either farmers or retired farmers. As the population doubles every 20 years, the scarcity and cost of farmland has driven many into other jobs, such as woodworking, manufacturing or tourism.

Twenty-one states have Amish setttlements, but Ohio have the most. In fact, of the 100,000 Amish in the world (some claim 200,000), 40,000 live in the Buckeye state.

According to Joan Hershberger, "It is a closed soceity and it operates by different rules. The Amish average six children per family and about 80 percent stay within the church. If someone leaves the church, we say they 'jumped the fence.'" Those who leave the church must make do with an eigth-grade education, which would seem to be a deterrent to striking out on one's own.

Often this year, we visit the Amish community passing by the children on their way home from school. We smile and wave at them and they would return our waves and smiles. Their schools are located close to their farms. They are educated in one-room schoolhouses, from grade one up to the 8'th grade level.

The Amish clear away from the convenience of life. They believe in simplicity and avoid modern things like automobiles, electricity, computers, fancy clothes and most other modern conveniences. They are misunderstood, but they are law abiding citizens.

We feel the peace and quiet in their community. No police cars and no policeman. There is NO crime. Now, it seems there is no more a safe place.

This is unfortunate and terrible event in the Amish community. Tears are shed, hearts are grieved but we all know, these peaceful & loving people FORGIVE.

Note: The Amish believe pictures are a sign of vanity, we respect their views.

Amish Connection (an update)

...on Anna, "I want to be with my children!"

You must see Anna's progress since we first met her. She was bed-confined for 4 months, weak & unable to move freely without pain. Her face pale ( low Hgb and Hct) and her eyes sunken. After (click) unconventional herbal & local breast cancer therapy, the tumor dropped off. Since then, she progressively improved in strength. She lost 35 pounds but at her present weight a picture of vibrant health.

We visit her once a week now.

In our first weekly visit we delivered carrot juice with dandelion roots & oat greens. We found Anna seated on a chair in their backyard with visitors from a nearby Amish community. She decided to entertain outdoors while "sunning-up." She was all smiles.

Their home is located close to tall trees, peaches, pears, apple trees and grape vines. Gentle blowing wind runs the windmill and in turn pump well water to cool off the tanks filled with milk. The milk comes from "milking" the cows twice a day.

We did not stay long but we were able to pick green beans and sugar beets. We also bought peaches, green apples and sweet corn. Esther suggested Anna to start walking down the hill with her kids and if she gets tired, she could ride back home on the "buggy."

The following week, she was helping her husband (Milo) run their store. Of course, she was happy to see us
again. Her good news, "I get the mail myself. Before, I order my kids to do it for me." Their home is on a 130 acre farm land and the mailbox is about a quarter mile down the road. Esther was impressed how stronger she looked. Anna selected the best delicious pears, squash, zucchini, and corn for us.

We noticed bees swarming and flying around. We were concerned but Anna reassured us not to worry. They were harmless if we do not swat or shoo them away and if we got stung, she said, "it is cure for arthritis!"

We asked why the bees were all over the place?
They smell the harvested honey and they want the honey back. If containers were left open, the bees would gather the honey and re-deposit them to the (click) hive boxes.

Anna
showed us how heat separates the honey from the honey comb (beewax). Last year Milo harvested 800 gallons but "this year nearly half less because of the wet weather this summer." We bought 4 buckets (5 gallons a bucket) of raw honey to keep for ourselves and our friends (who ordered).

In our last visit, we brought rocket fuel booster (increases immune system) she requested. It is a juiced mixture of garlic, onion, honey, cayenne pepper, ginger and lemon, in a quart of hot water. She liked this concoction and felt it is helping her family, too.

"When I (Esther) was asked how much I charge for the delivery of the 'stuff'... if only she sincerely knew the joy of seeing her with a glowing smile and the blessings I received can't be replaced with money or material things in this world. It is always a wonderful feeling to see someone getting healed and feeling well."

Milo was happy to tell us that a day earlier, he noticed somebody jogging towards their house. It was Anna! She was all enthusiasm and energy. She said, she had not eaten "meat" for 4 months. An Amish vegetarian?

We learned most Amish who get sick go to Mexico for treatment, but they decided not to follow that route. We asked "why?" Her answer, "I want to be with my children!"

, youngest of 11 children. Anna has 2 sets of identical twins in the family.

More Amish Visits

Debbie came to Ohio for a visit.

While here, Debbie and Esther talked about ways & means to help (click) Jill, a daughter of a friend who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Esther showed Debbie how to prepare "Rocket Booster" drink, a mixture of garlic, onion, honey, cayenne pepper, ginger & lemon. Taken daily this will help increase the immune system.

On Debbie's last day of visit, we drove to our Amish friends and had a great time learning how bees gather nectar and turn them to honey. Nectar in liquid form is thickened into the right consistency by the fanning action of honey bees' wings (bees' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute). Honey is then sealed in hives (see hive box picture).

Milo showed the "refrigeration room" where produce are stored in summer. Winter, he goes to the pond to saw & haul chunks of ice. "The ice will last the whole summer," he added.

Red and yellow apples are delicious especially when picked direct from the tree. We brought home whole wheat Amish bread from Millie, honey from Milo & Anna and zucchini from Andy & Anna (another Anna).

Debbie is a supporter of the New Center of learning.

Avoid Hospitals

When is the best time to avoid hospitals like plaque?

If you CAN, stay out of the hospital during summer-especially July. Why? That's the month when medical students become interns, interns become residents, and residents become fellows and full-fledged doctors. They are NEW on the job.

Summer hospital horror stories aren't just medical lore:
  • Adjusted mortality rate rises 4 percent in July and August click (National Bureau of Economic Research) for the average major teaching hospital.
  • 14 more deaths occur at major teaching hospitals than normally without turnover.
Another tip: Try to schedule surgeries first thing in the morning, and preferably early in the week, when doctors are at their best and before schedules get backed up, Sherer says. click (Dr. David Sherer's Hospital Survival Guide).

So get wise, ask, and read! Your Hospital won't tell you a lot of things.

Summer is gone and Fall is here. Enjoy. Avoid me & the hospital if you can :-)

"Cherry Picking"

Cherry tomato plants taller than you, Debbie? "Wow!" Our tomatoes here (Ohio) are not as tall, but we get good produce, though. What did you do to make them grow? They are also climbing over your fence! Is it the beautiful California weather?

Reply: ....can't believe how much bigger the plants are now than they were then...they're unbelievable! I can't even give all the tomatoes away there's so many. Maybe I should keep the "kitty litter" that I scoop out of their boxes and just put it in the garden from now on! :-)

So, that's the secret, "kitty litter" from your eight (8) kitties. That is ORGANIC growing!

"NO JUNK"

MARY GRACE...

Esther and I met her two years ago.

As soon as she sat down and started playing the piano, silence engulfed the hall. A hush of anticipation and awe overwhelmed everyone. After her first piece, the hush of anticipation was replaced by a sudden surge of applause.

It was a night of great inspiration from a young and talented accomplished piano player.

How can someone with an arm and leg disability play a musical instrument much more a piano?

Here she is Mary Grace, a young artist born with a right arm "stump" and a right leg with three (3) toes and eight (8) inches shorter than the left .

She was born in the Philippines. As a child she was practically "hidden" from everyone by her family. She was told to stay-put in her room or she had to cover the "stump" when a guest visited their home. People shunned her, never invited to parties, and had no friends when she started going to school. She often wondered why she was born "different"and deserved being born with a disability.

She could not do menial jobs, buttoning her dress or taking off a candy wrapper. She was taunted by classmates and a butt of fun. No self confidence or self esteem for a long time. She used to (and still do) cry herself to sleep, but "If not for God sustaining me, I would have never made it this far," she opined.

In spite of all these, she graduated in college with a degree in Psychology! "I took Psychology to learn why people stare at me," she smiled. Today, she could almost do anything like a normal person with two hands.

She believes, God did create "NO JUNK." God gave her a gift to play piano.

When she was five (5) years old her grandmother found a teacher willing to teach a one-handed student. The first three piano teachers refused but after her grandmother promised to pay the teacher the price of two (2) students, the fourth teacher agreed to teach her.

This is the rest of the story in her own words:

"After I started my piano lessons, I found out that I could play with my 'stump'. Playing the piano became the outlet of my sadness. There are times my back and my 'stump' hurt, but I like to keep on to inspire people through music. It has become my passion!"

Mary Grace had been giving concerts for the past ten (10) years now for charities and to name a few: Volunteers For The Rehabilitation Of The Handicap and The Disabled, Inc., (click) 1000 Missionary Movement, and at the present time, giving concerts to raise funds for (click) AaMI (Adopt a Minister International) and the (click) VOP (Voice of Prophecy).

What a great & wonderful example of overcoming a disability with the help of God and a super determination of a young heart like Mary Grace!

We were blessed to be with Grace in our Choosing To Live meeting & testimony. Ben H. Sanidad III sang, "My Redeemer Is Faithful & True," at the close of the service.
